November 23: Aidan's Report Card

One of the best things, for me as a parent, about LJCDS is the extensive comments that the teachers add to report cards.  It's always great to hear other people confirm what I already know - just how amazing my kids are.  The comment from Aidan's football coach was a HUGE surprise to both me and Bill...

November 20: Griffin Loses a Tooth!

Tooth Number Three is OUT!

This is how Griffin prepared his bed for the Tooth Fairy's visit.  The white thing in the middle is the tooth.  The picture is of a Lego airplane and it is to let the TF know what he would like to receive in return for his tooth.

Hagrid's Hut

Apparently the Tooth Fairy didn't have any Lego airplanes but s/he DID have a Harry Potter Lego on hand!  Cool!

November 18 and 19: Midnight Showing of Harry Potter VII, Part 1

I had been dreading this night all week. I was the only one who DIDN'T want to give up sleep to see the movie.  Even Aidan, who hasn't read the books and has only a passing interest in the movies, wanted to go.  It is an event, true.  I tried to go to be as early as possible all week but wasn't able to get in a nap on the big day.  After work, I picked Griffin up from school and took him to Nonnie's, then it was time to go down to school to see Zoey and the Madrigals perform the Winter Concert.  Liane accompanied me while Bill and Aidan hung out at home, napped and then went to the theater at about 7:00 pm.

Our friends the Bates, mom Kim, Shealiegh, Nathan and Aislinn, snagged a place in line at 5:00 and we got great seats as a result.  But, we had to spend a few hours (or more) outside.

 Games were played.

When Zoey, Liane and I arrived at 9:00 pm, I took orders and went out for donuts (Peterson's) and coffee (Barnes & Noble Cafe.)

 Blankets were worn.

At one point the sprinklers went off.  We were on the grass but hopped off in time.  There was a woman sleeping next to us and she got a bit wet...

At about 11:00 the let us into the theater.  We had tickets to the IMAX show and it was worth every penny!  Because Harry, Hermione and Ron were camping all over England for so much of of the movie, there was some incredible scenery to be had.

Waiting for the movie to start....

Nate, Aidan and Zoey sat in the row behind the rest of us.

We got out of the theater at 2:30 am and stumbled home.  Asleep (mostly) by 3:00 am, we were all up by 6:30 am and getting ready for our days at school and work.  Aidan took a shower and said he felt sick, so he stayed home from school and caught up on sleep. I worked from 8:30 to 5:00 and was dragging myself around Friday and Saturday.  Bill and Zoey seem to be caught up by now.  HPVII Part 2, July 2011!

November 10 - 15: Liane in NYC

Our friend (friends are the family you choose) Liane, who has been bunking with Zoey since September, took herself on a mini-vacation to NYC to visit a friend and roam the streets.  She wandered and walked and never got lost and ate lots of great food and went to cool bookstores and coffee shops and heard some music and didn't go to a SINGLE museum!!!  She brought us back some amazing coffee (in a cool jar)from Stumptown Coffee. She also, at my request, stopped by Books of Wonder the coolest kid's bookstore ever, and bought me a book.  Incredibly, it is one I already have...  Then, also at my request, she went to EATALY, map above, and had some amazing food.  She even brought back a little cheese!  She had a fabulous time but we really missed her and are glad she is home!

November 12 and 13: Once Upon a Mattress Performance

A very edited version of Once Upon a Mattress was performed on Friday and Saturday nights by the 7th and 8th graders who took theater and theater tech as a class this trimester.  Aidan had the part of Prince Harry, beau to Lady Larkin.  He was one of two boys in the play, the other, and eighth grader, had the lead role of Prince Dauntless.  He was great.  He got to be a bit of a ham and spout Latin, which he did with great verve and élan.  Even Griffin, who had been home sick most of the week with walking pneumonia, got a kick out of the play and laugh out loud more than once.  Mr Murphy, the dean of the middle school, was the silent king, and brought great presence and humor to the roll.

Aidan's desire to put himself out on the stage has been a bit of a surprise to since he seems so shy and retiring most of the time.  But, he has a sharp sense of humor and a love of opera and classical music (he just had me purchase Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche and Faust:  Part One by Goethe because he had heard the music that was inspired by these writings and wanted to read the books. I wonder if he will really read them...) and and has watched much Monty Python in his short life and why wouldn't that all add up to a desire to perform?  I hope he keeps it up!  It seemed like such an obvious and natural thing for Zoey when she first pursued it in 7th grade (Singing in the Rain was her first production in middle school) and it's a surprise and delight to see Aidan give it a go!  Once last performance for the Lower School on Monday morning then it is on to his next elective, ART!  Can't wait to see what he creates in that class.  Such a renaissance guy.

November 6: Zoey in the Recording Studio

Zoey, along with her voice teacher (the one we pay, not her teacher at school) Camila Arnold, and Bill went to Pepperland Recording Studio to get three songs down for Zoey's conservatory audition CD.

Mr Renner, the producer/arranger/owner of the studio apparently is a Beatles fan and had quite a bit of memorabilia, as well as buddhist items, in the studio (and thus the name.)

It was quite amazing for me to hear the finished product.  I have heard Zoey sing with the Madrigals, in musicals and at home in the shower, but to hear her voice in a studio setting with professional background music and the other extra little touches brought tears to my eyes.  I know nothing about music and feel a bit lost when she shares her experiences, thoughts and knowledge with me, but hearing Zoey sing on this recording quieted any doubts or concerns I might have had about her pursuing a musical education in college and in life.  Her voice is beautiful and she is wonderful and I feel so grateful to know that she has a passion and she is able to feed it and follow it.

Se Tu M'ami by Alessandro Scarlatti (arie antiche)

Se tu m'ami , se tu sospiri
sol per me, gentil pastor,
ho dolor dei tuoi martiri,
ho diletto del tuo amor.
Ma se pensi che soletto
io ti debba riamar,
pastorello, sei soggetto
facilmente a t'ingannar.
pastorello, sei soggetto
facilmente a t'ingannar
facilmente a t'ingannar
Bella rosa porporina
oggi Silvia sceglierà,
con la scusa della spina
doman poi la sprezzerà.
doman poi la sprezzerà.
Ma degli uomini il consiglio
io per me non seguirò.
Non perchè mi piace il giglio
gli altri fiori sprezzerò

Beau Soir by Debussy (Art Song)

Lass From the Low Countree
Oh, he was a lord of high degree
And she was a lass from the low countree
But she loved his lordship so tenderly.
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and God

One morn when the sun was on the mead
He passed by her door on a milk white steed
She smiled and she spoke, but he paid no heed
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and God

If you be a lass from the low countree
Don't love of no lord of high degree
They haint got a heart for sympathy
Oh sorrow, sing sorrow
Now she sleeps in the valley where the wild flowers nod
And no one knows she loved him but herself and Go

November 4: Zoey's Report Card

It speaks for itself, but I would like to add that I think this is the first time in a while Zoey has had all As on a report card.  There is usually one B+ in there somewhere...  How can she be so dang good at math????  I told her she has to take it in college just because she's so good at it.  She growled at me.  I am incredibly proud of her.  Of course we think she's smart, but it's always nice to have others confirm it.
