September 2: Back to School Night - Middle School

Back to School Night for Aidan.  This was our tenth B2S at LJCDS, between both kids.  The parents, after enjoying a lovely buffet of fruits and cheeses as well as mingling with their beautiful selves, get a moving speech from The Head of School.  Chris Shuck has been the head for a few years now, after teaching at the school for 20 something years.  He is a great guy and always has an interesting thing to say.  This year he talked about his personal mission to change the word "but" to "and" whenever he sees it in print.   There is also always a speech from the head of the specific school (lower, middle, upper) and a speech from the volunteer who is heading up the fundraising.  Mr Shuck's speech/mission dovetailed nicely with the fundraising when he said something like, Your children get to do X, Y and Z here AND it costs you (only) $25,000!  He had just given a rundown of what the actual costs of educating a child in a public school for a year are.  So, I say, We get to pay to send our children to this amazing private school AND we still pay taxes so that other kids can get a subpar education in public school!

Above is Aidan's class schedule that we followed for the night - about 7 minutes in each classroom.  The most exciting was Mandarin.  His teacher has a very thick accent AND she shared some very exciting things the kids will be doing this year, including an assignment to go to a chinese restaurant and order using as much of the language as possible, celebrating the Moon Festival and Chinese New year and a very cool study website she has created.  I am really thrilled and proud of Aidan's course choices this year.  He gets three electives over the course of the year and his first is Musical Theater.  Can't remember what else he chose, but I'm sure it's interesting.

Also, he is playing football this season... He was placed on B Team and has a lot of games between now and November 2nd.
